The canvas of Chuck Taylor can withstand a lot, but a poorly set machine cycle can warp the upper, detach the vulcanized sole, or cause the rubber to yellow. Converse officially discourages machine washing and recommends hand cleaning with lukewarm water and mild soap. Despite this warning, mechanical washing is still possible if rigorous preparation and precise settings are followed.

Diagnosis of the pair before machine washing

Before considering the program or temperature, inspect the shoe. A pair with a sole showing early signs of detachment will not survive the mechanical stresses of the drum. Vibrations and hot water accelerate the degradation of the thermoplastic glue that bonds the rubber sole to the canvas upper.

Also check the condition of the metal eyelets. Oxidized eyelets may leave rust stains on the fabric during washing. If you spot any corrosion, switch to manual cleaning.

  • Sole: no visible detachment, even partial, around the perimeter of the shoe
  • Canvas: no tears or fraying at the reinforcement seams
  • Decorative elements: heat-sealed patches, fragile embroidery or prints make mechanical washing too risky
  • Eyelets: no rust or verdigris around the perforations

This diagnosis takes less than a minute and helps avoid irreversible damage. An old or already weakened pair has no place in a drum.

For further details, the checklist before washing your Converse outlines each control point based on the model and material.

Preparing the Converse before the washing cycle

Removing the laces and insoles is the first non-negotiable step. Laces, especially white ones, should be washed separately in a mesh bag or by hand with Marseille soap. Insoles absorb water and take a long time to dry inside the shoe, which fosters mold.

Next, dust off the pair dry. A soft-bristled brush (like a nail brush or an old toothbrush) is enough to dislodge dirt and debris embedded in the grooves of the sole. This step prevents dirt from redepositing on the canvas during washing.

Pre-treating stains before the machine

Machine washing does not replace targeted stain removal. Apply a paste of baking soda and lukewarm water to visible stains, scrub with a soft brush, and let it sit for about fifteen minutes. For the rubber toe cap, a cloth soaked in mild soap and rubbed in circular motions is sufficient to remove scuff marks.

Greasy stains require a distinct treatment: a few drops of dish soap directly on the area, followed by light brushing. Without pre-treatment, the machine will set the stain instead of removing it.

Machine settings and protecting the pair

A delicate cold cycle is the only acceptable program. Hot water warps the canvas, softens the glue, and can cause the white rubber band to yellow. Select a maximum temperature of 30 °C if your machine does not offer a strict cold cycle.

Place each shoe in an individual washing bag, or if not available, in a pillowcase tied with a knot. This bag reduces shocks against the drum. We recommend adding two or three bath towels to the drum: they cushion impacts and balance the load.

Detergent and products to avoid

Use a gentle liquid detergent, without bleaching agents. Bleach and oxygen-based stain removers attack the dyes of colored canvas and can create halos on white models. No fabric softener either: it leaves a film that prevents the canvas from breathing and attracts dust more quickly.

Use one-third of the usual detergent amount. Overdosing creates excess foam that seeps between the sole and the upper, which standard rinsing will not eliminate.

Drying the Converse after washing: the critical phase

The dryer is as discouraged as machine washing by Converse. Direct heat warps the vulcanized sole and can shrink the canvas. Drying should be done exclusively in open air, at room temperature, away from any heat source (radiator, hairdryer, direct sunlight).

Immediately stuff each shoe with newspaper or white kraft paper. The paper absorbs internal moisture and maintains the shape of the upper during drying. Change the stuffing after a few hours, as soon as it is saturated.

  • Lay the sneakers flat or slightly tilted, sole up, to facilitate drainage
  • Avoid printed colored newspaper on white Converse (risk of ink transfer)
  • Count on at least a full day of drying before wearing the pair again

A rushed, too quick, or too hot drying process negates all the benefits of washing. The canvas stiffens, the rubber yellows, and the pair loses its original shape.

When to give up the machine and clean by hand

Some situations make manual cleaning not only preferable but mandatory. Leather or suede Converse cannot withstand immersion. A damp cloth with mild soap is sufficient for leather, while suede requires a dry crepe brush and a waterproofing spray after cleaning.

For canvas models in good condition but not very dirty, targeted local cleaning is more effective than a full cycle. Scrub the affected area with a brush, Marseille soap, and lukewarm water, rinse with a damp cloth, and then let air dry. This method preserves the rigidity of the canvas and extends the lifespan of the pair well beyond what repeated machine washes allow.

Mechanical washing remains a last resort for a heavily soiled canvas pair. We find that a frequency exceeding two or three machine washes over the lifespan of a pair significantly accelerates the wear of the glue and the warping of the sole. Between machine washes, hand cleaning and good drying are sufficient to keep your Converse in good condition.
